The deconstructed sample, pressed completely flat, allows us to trace the exact, true shape of every pattern piece with zero distortion — this is the gold standard for reverse-engineering accuracy. The intact sample serves as a simultaneous reference for overall construction, topstitching placement, pocket position, and visual balance. Sending only one sample forces us to guess shapes from a 3D garment, introducing error. Two samples = one perfect pattern.
We use industry-leading Gerber Accumark for all pattern creation, grading, and marker making — the same system used by Nike, PVH, and global production factories. This matters because your digital files will open correctly at virtually any manufacturer worldwide without conversion errors. Gerber's precision tools let us true seams to 1/32", grade entire size sets in minutes, and nest markers that routinely exceed 80% fabric utilization.
Digital prototype pattern creation typically takes 3–7 business days from the date we receive your sample or all necessary design information, depending on garment complexity. Simple knit pieces (like a basic tee or sweatpant) land at the fast end; complex woven constructions with collars, pleats, or multiple pockets take longer. Rush services are available for an additional fee. Note: we deliver the digital file — your sample sewer's timeline for cutting and sewing is separate.
Our pattern-making fee includes creation of the digital prototype pattern file plus one round of revisions based on fit feedback from your sewn sample — no hidden charges. Additional revision rounds, rush fees, physical sample deconstruction, shrinkage adjustment, grading, and marker making are separate add-on services quoted independently. We provide a clear, itemized quote before starting any work so you know exactly what you're paying for.
A grainline is an arrow printed on every pattern piece that must be placed parallel to the fabric's selvedge edge during cutting — getting it wrong causes garments to twist, pull, or hang off-balance permanently after just one wash. Woven fabrics have virtually no give on the straight grain but stretch on the bias; knits have maximum stretch in the crossgrain direction. We set grainlines with precision in Gerber Accumark for every piece, and our marker making service locks those grainlines when nesting the cutting layout so nothing shifts in production.

Our prototype pattern templates are foundational block slopers — available in our digital product store — that serve as a cost-effective starting point for designers who want to test ideas before investing in a full custom pattern. They are zero-ease base blocks (no wearing ease added), meaning you cut them, sew them in your fabric, and fit them to your model before sending back for finalization. They are NOT production-ready on their own — they require fitting, design adaptation, and finalization.
Yes — we specialize in patterns for knits, strategically reducing pattern measurements relative to body measurements based on the fabric's stretch percentage and recovery to achieve negative ease and correct fit. A 50% stretch jersey requires a fundamentally different pattern than a 10% stretch ponte. We'll ask you for a fabric swatch and stretch test results to dial in the exact amount of negative ease your specific fabric needs.

You have two options: send the sample as-is and we'll pattern its exact current shape, or specify the desired corrections and we'll use your fit model's measurements to fix the fit in the digital pattern directly. The key is to be explicit about your goal. "Pattern this sample exactly" is a different brief from "Pattern this sample but fix the armhole and add 1" to the hem." Both are valid — we just need clarity. If the fit issues are severe, it may be more cost-effective to address them in the physical sample first.
Yes — our production patterns include standard seam allowances built into every piece (typically 3/8" on seams and 1" on hems, unless you specify otherwise), so the files are ready to send directly to your cut-and-sew factory without modification. If you need a "net" pattern (no seam allowance, also called a sew line pattern) for use with an automated cutter or specific CAD workflow, just tell us during the brief and we'll deliver both versions. Seam allowance specifications can also be adjusted per construction zone — for example, tighter on neckbands, wider on hem allowances.
Provide clear written feedback and photos of the sample sewn from our pattern, pointing to the specific fit or design issues on the fit model — this is how we translate what you see into precise digital adjustments. Vague feedback like "it doesn't fit" gives us nothing to work with. Specific feedback like "the back shoulder is dropping 3/4" and the side seam is twisting forward" lets us fix it precisely and quickly. One revision round is included in our standard service; additional rounds can be purchased separately.
Once your base-size pattern is approved via fit sample, the standard production path is: Pattern Grading (creating the full size run) → Shrinkage Compensation (if fabric has been washed/tested) → Marker Making (optimizing the cutting layout for fabric efficiency). After those steps, your factory has everything they need to begin bulk cutting and production. Each of these is a separate service we offer — and the order matters.

Yes — reverse engineering (creating a new pattern from an existing garment) is one of our most common requests, requiring two identical items: one we carefully deconstruct and press flat, and one kept intact for construction reference. We must own both during the process. We cannot create an accurate reverse-engineered pattern from photos, a single garment, or fabric pieces. Once the pattern is drafted, you own all rights to it. Please note: we will not reproduce patterns from garments you don't own the design rights to.
Yes — if a sample sewn from our pattern (or any existing digital pattern) needs fit or design changes, we can alter the digital pattern file precisely using Gerber Accumark's modification tools. We do not alter physical garments — we modify the digital file. Common alterations include adjusting ease, repositioning style lines, reshaping armholes, adding or removing pockets, and correcting length. One round of revisions is included with new pattern orders; additional rounds and alterations to previously delivered or third-party patterns are priced separately.
A block (or sloper) is a basic, fitted pattern without any style details — no seam allowance, no ease, no design features — used as a reusable foundational template for developing multiple new styles quickly. Think of it as your brand's master blueprint:
- once you have a block that fits your fit model perfectly
- you can slash
- spread
- pivot it into dozens of different designs without starting from scratch each time
Walking seams means physically matching and measuring each pair of adjoining pattern edges against each other to confirm they are identical in length and that curves flow together smoothly at every junction point. When seam lengths don't match — even by 1/8" — the factory sewer compensates by easing or stretching the fabric, which creates puckering, twisting, or buckling in the finished garment that no pressing can fix. We walk every seam pair as a mandatory final step in our quality check before any pattern file is delivered, using Gerber Accumark's measurement and comparison tools to verify within 1/32" tolerance.
Notches are small V-shaped or rectangular cuts on seam edges used to align pattern pieces during sewing; drill holes are interior marks pinpointing the exact placement of pockets, darts, rivets, and other features. Without accurate notches and drill holes, even a perfectly shaped pattern becomes impossible to sew consistently in production — workers can't align pieces correctly or place components accurately at speed. We add all critical markings as part of our standard pattern drafting process.
Shrinkage is the reduction in fabric dimensions after washing and drying — if not compensated for in the pattern, the finished washed garment will be smaller than intended, failing your size specifications. We offer a dedicated shrinkage compensation service:
- you send washed-and-dried fabric test blocks
- we measure the shrinkage percentage in both length and width
- we permanently enlarge the production patterns by exactly that amount
Flat pattern making drafts shapes digitally in 2D CAD — using precise measurements, mathematical relationships, and industry-standard tools — while draping shapes fabric in 3D directly on a mannequin before transferring to paper. We specialize exclusively in flat pattern making using Gerber Accumark, which is the dominant method in industrial production because it is repeatable, scalable, and compatible with automated cutting systems. Draping is more common in high-fashion ateliers but does not translate directly to mass production without being converted to flat patterns first.
Yes — pattern grading is a separate service we offer immediately after your base pattern is finalized and fit-approved, creating a complete size run (e.g., XS through XL or 2 through 22) using ASTM-standard grade rules customized to your brand's fit model. Grading must be done on a clean, approved base — never on a rough draft or ill-fitting pattern, as any fit issue in the base is amplified in every size. We use your fit specs to draft or correct patterns to hit precise numbers, rather than relying on generic industry averages. A well-written fit spec is one of the most valuable documents a brand can create, because it makes every future style consistent and eliminates subjective interpretation.
